History

1891 The church began with the Free Evangelical Lutheran Church and services under the leadership of Arne Anderson of Chicago. Services were conducted in Swedish. The church was located on the corner of Geneva and Williams Street.

1921 With several new members, the church reorganized as the Free Mission Church in January with Mike Peterson providing the energetic leadership. In March that same year, plans were made to enlarge the old building. The remodeling was completed in July and dedicated. We now date our years from this event.

1922 The official name of the church was changed to “Gospel Tabernacle”. All services were conducted in English beginning May of 1923, but Swedish services were held on Sunday afternoons for those interested.

1961 The church continued to grow through the years undergoing remodeling and building programs, and the church name was changed to Calvary Community Church.

1971 At an historic meeting of the membership on May 14, the church voted to relocate to a larger land site where future ministries would have greater possibilities. June 23, the church family selected a 5 acre tract of land at the corner of Highway 50 and Harris Road. This desirable property was a generous gift from Mr. Paul Brandel. We relocated to this site in July of 1972.

1985 In March, we held a ground breaking for a 25,000 sq. ft. 2 story education-gym addition.

85 YEARS Countless, men, women, and children have given their time, talents, energy, and money to make sure the ministry of Calvary Community Church has carried on these last 85 years. Hundreds, perhaps thousands of souls have been won through those who have ministered at Calvary Community Church.
